Logic, by Faith Erin Hicks

Continuing my science fiction theme for the day, I’m taking us on over to Faith’s little 24 hour comic, Logic. Faith (who’s done such comics as Demonology 101 and Ice (normally found on Modern Tales, and one of the strips not yet restored to the system after the Great Modern Tales Crash)) was one of those cartoonists crazy and dedicated enough to participate in the 24 hour Comic Challenge. From what I’m able to gather, cartoonists spend a day drawing 24 strips of a comic, one for each hour of the day. Usually these works are rough and have bizarre storylines, and Logic is no exception. Well, in the bizarre storyline aspect at least. The artwork is still quite haunting and delicious.

One of the intriguing things about Logic is that this story is told without words. I remember a story in the “A Distant Soil” comic book, where a girl goes shopping for a gift… a heart pendant (if I’m remembering rightly) and she gives half of it to her boyfriend who is going off on a trip somewhere. That story too was without words, and it managed to tell a delightful story through images alone.

It is not easy to tell a story with no dialog or narration, just the power of imagery. Faith rises to that challenge with Logic, showing that she is not just a superb artist, or a talented storyteller, but something more – a mixture of the two, able to let the panels do the talking, not the characters. Now if only Modern Tales would restore Ice to its archives so we could continue the adventures of Hunter and crew in future frozen London, and my Faith-art-fix would be assured.

Addendum note: Modern Tales did finally restore the Ice archives. Sadly, the comic is currently on hiatus, but the archives are free and well worth reading.
