Girly

Girly has been having an interesting little storyline of late, dealing with a day where Otra, needing to get work done, didn’t go out with Winter. Now Winter didn’t mind that much. She’s a half-sister to get to know better, and Otra wasn’t likely to go off on any adventures today, so why stay home? Especially as I got the impression Otra wanted some privacy while working.

Naturally, things haven’t been going well for Otra, as she’s having an odd form of creator’s block. We can already see the final result of this creator’s block… she’ll end up having an O-format for the sweater she’s designing, the designer will go gaga over it, and life will go on for another day. And when Otra (while trying to find out what’s wrong with the marshmallow kitty) gets the opportunity for adventure on her own… she hesitates. She wants Winter there with her.

It’s very sweet and touching… and it made some sense. Winter has always been the instigator in their adventures (though when it came time to becoming lovers, I think Otra pounced first). However, now we can see that this is a two-way street. Winter needs Otra just as much as Otra needs Winter. Without Otra around, Winter hesitated. She ends up needing to be rescued (fortunately, Officer Policeguy was handy and willing to make the save).

This partnership between Winter and Otra is just that: a partnership. We’ve already seen that Otra is reluctant to get into adventure without Winter there… but Winter is likewise slow to act, unable to do what needs doing, without Otra. In the backstory, when we found out about Winter’s life before she started following Otra around and getting her into mischief… Winter was depressive, unhappy, and didn’t have the sense of whimsy and adventure she has now. Literally, meeting Otra brought that side out in Winter… that meeting of souls, realizing that this girl before her is the one, and that everything her parents told her was true.

And that’s rather touching. While psychologists would caution about these two depending too much on the other and that their relationship might be a little unhealthy and all that… hell, I’m worrying about the psychological aspects of cartoon characters in an unrealistic cartoon world. Now that is insane.

But that’s the fun thing about Girly. The insanity is what draws me in… and lets me enjoy it so much. As for Winter and Otra’s adventures apart from each other… well, I look forward to when they’re together again, and admit to one another just how much they need each other.
