Fiction – Transference

October 17th, 2007 by Tangent

And on the theme of Transference stories (oh look, I’ve coined another phrase for the non-existent Tangents Lexicon) I dragged out a story I wrote four years ago from my fanfic archives. As far as fanfics (and for that matter, my own stories) go, this one is actually quite good. The Transference is not in the “tradition” of an older person sent into a younger person’s body or even of a soul sent back to earth in a cute little animal form to try and find redemption. Instead, the story is more of an alternative reality story… of a “what if” scenario.

The roots of the story lie in the distant past of the CRfH Fanfic Community when the fanfic writer Tchernobyl wrote a little story called The Glimpse (and its sequel), in which the character Margaret was granted a glimpse into a world where she made some very different choices. My own take on an alternative universe was set more in the same time as the Roomies… and indeed I wrote it as if it had happened in the comic itself, in a moment that was not recorded in the strip.

Transference was the result. And for all my disdain toward the “Freaky Friday” form of transference stories… I feel this one wasn’t that bad. The transference… is not between two people… but one person in two universes… a person who due to a choice has led a very different story. In many ways it’s a much more uplifting story than what CRfH has become, and perhaps that’s another reason why it’s one of my favorites.

The result ran 15,000 words long and was easily one of my best stories to date, even including my later works. And now… Transference. Enjoy.

Addendum note: The Keenspot forums seem to have had some code issues, and Tchernobyl’s fanfics got mangled. I sent Tcher a message to ask if he still had a copy of the fanfic and will host it for him if he wants me to.
