Misfile

Misfile continues to flirt on the edge of lesbianism. It’s a flirtation that started a bit back in the comic when I think Ash admitted to Emily that if she was stuck as a girl for a while, she’d end up as a lesbian (which would be a twist from the traditional “woman trapped in a man’s body” line some men use). Ash’s attraction to Em has been a constant theme, and Em’s own waffling on her own sexuality has hinted strongly that these two would end up together. Naturally then we’d be tossed a curveball in the introduction of potential love-interest Missi Fuller. I’m unsure if this is another flareup of “Moonlighting” Syndrome or an introduction of a new character to create a love triangle situation. What I find interesting however are the metaphysical implications that Rumsiel brought up when he mentioned that the files do “weird stuff.”

While Ash’s folder is in the female human filing system, it’s still marked as “male” (which is part of the reason Ash remembers her previous life). It would be reasonable then to believe that bonds between folders (planned relationships) would still exist, despite the mixup in the folder’s placement. Predestination considerations aside, I have to wonder at the metaphysical implications. In the comic, Missi never once thought of being with other women… until she met Ash. If they were predestined to be together, then might the file system be fudging things (such as sexuality) to bring together this relationship, or at the very least (assuming that predestination doesn’t exist, but that potentiality does) the potential of an Ash/Missi relationship? This is where the metaphysics get really surreal.

What if the point of an Ash/Missi relationship was for the creation of a child? Whether down the line or just a teen pregnancy thing, we suddenly have a problem as Ash couldn’t get anyone pregnant. How durable are the error protocols of Heaven’s filing system? What warnings would Rumsiel’s bosses have that something… has gone awry? And doesn’t it suggest then that due to this predestination/potentiality conflict that rather than change Ash’s file to be totally female, they’d just put it where it belonged? (And then banish Rumsiel, no doubt.) I doubt Misfile is going to go that metaphysical on us, but it’s still interesting to consider. Hopefully we’ll also avoid excessive fanservice and approach this storyline with a modicon of maturity and intelligence… and a story that makes you curious as to the future, instead of dwelling on pretty pictures that have an empty meaning.
