Tangential News
As some of you may know, I’ve been planning a site redesign for Tangents Reviews for several months now. If this were an ideal world, I’d be making this announcement with the new design and a new site. Unfortunately, things have changed significantly from my days of coding HTML. I’m still trying to come to terms with CSS and with changes to HTML. Combined with moving into a new apartment (sans roommates or the like) and work, I haven’t been able to properly code up a new design just yet.
The reason for the redesign is that Tangents is leaving Panel2panel. Glych has been a superb and downright patient host, but it seems the Rob Howard Hate Club has insufficient brains to realize they can send hate e-mails to my e-mail account rather than bother Glych. It’s not like it was hidden or anything, but it seems that having an e-mail address named TangentsReviews is too subtle for these trolls hiding in their dark dank cellars to comprehend. No doubt it will take them several months after I finally leave P2P before they realize I’m gone; hopefully they won’t fill Glych’s e-mail with more pointless drivel.
Don’t think that they convinced Glych to kick me out, however; this was a mutually-agreed upon decision. I’ve wanted to implement Project Wonderful ads into the site, and Glych isn’t ready for that. I also have had to watch some of my comments lest I offend people who Glych relies on for paychecks. While I’m not one to trash-talk my apparent contemporaries, I have been known to offend sensibilities from time to time, whether by accident or with a deliberate barb. Editorial freedom will be a welcome sight.
I’ve not yet decided what to do with the Panel2panel forum account, but in a couple of months I’ll either shift to a new forum or eliminate the forum entirely (especially if I find a way to incorporate reader responses directly into the main site, possibly by hosting responses through Livejournal or the like). I do not intend on shifting Tangents to a blog. However, if I can figure out how to incorporate the better aspects of blogs to my website, I will.
With luck, within a month I’ll have finished the site redesign and found a hosting service. I’m researching which companies would be best suited for my purposes without going overboard. For a glimpse at the Tangents beta site, visit http://tangent.panel2panel.com/template.html (though as I’ve said before, it’s not developed very far; I’m still working on basic design principles before coding in such things as headers and navigation). Feel free to leave comments and suggestions at the Tangents redesign forum thread.
Addendum note: The P2P forums were taken down by Glych. I plan on restoring them on my own site sometime in the future, when I have some time (especially as there’s a new version of the forum out, so I might as well upgrade the forums at the same time).
