The Devil’s Panties

One of the dreams webcartoonists often have is that they can make their comic their day job. It’s not easy by any stretch of the imagination – only a relative handful of cartoonists have managed to become self-sufficient off of merchandising and advertising through their comic, and on occasion I’ll hear stories of people stealing online art and selling it as their own. Today’s The Devil’s Panties has a more… literal story of theft, and a happy ending (which is unfortunately rare when it comes to art theft): a fan at a convention shoplifted a copy from cartoonist Jennie Breeden’s table and then returned to pay for the comic after sobering up. Given how much work goes into the drawing and printing of these comics, it’s heartening to see that Breeden’s fans think highly enough of her that they want to pay for her work. Of course, it helps that Breeden’s very nice in person (even when exhausted from travel and setting up for conventions), but I have to think this fan returned to pay partly because TDP is just that good; especially the print compilations, which often contain stories and art not found on the website.
