Juanthuur: One Way or Another

Juanthuur: One Way or Another is different than most of the comics I’ve reviewed in that it ended five years ago. As such, I’d normally not bother with it… except that it’s much easier to understand Faevv (the primary protagonist of Katie Sweet’s sequel) if you’ve actually read the prequel. The comic is about the Juathuur, a group of nomadic humans who dwell on large wooden vessels and who have hereditary magical powers. At the start of the comic, Faevv (who was raised by her mother, who was not Juathuur) ended up joining the Raft her father had belonged to and began to learn how to use her shadow-based magic (which is fairly rare among her tribe and allows her to manipulate space). But as the comic continues, she meets Weijuaru, a Juanthuur who abandoned the tribes to become king of the Burnt Country… and turned the land into a haven for Juanthuur deserters, and has to decide who she wants to ally herself with: a tribe who she barely knows, a charismatic young king with power over time, or to follow her own path.
