Extra Ordinary

As has become painfully obvious to me over the years, I’m not very good when it comes to reviewing gag-a-day strips. Part of this lies with the difficulty of finding an underlying theme that would unify a longer review. That said, I’ve rather enjoyed reading Extra Ordinary (which provides a whimsical glimpse into the mind of cartoonist Li Chen and her adventures with her cat Shoelace (who doesn’t like lasagna apparently) and Jordan (who’s either her boyfriend or husband; it’s never specified) while living in the insanity that is Australia. As such, Li goes through whimsical four-panel hijinks and fits of whimsy with her cat (and at times Jordan, though he is more often the straight man to Li’s whimsical musings). There’s no storyline to speak of, though as the comic’s archives have grown Li has taken time to craft some rather ingenious updates that combine art and web-coding (thanks to Jordan’s behind-the-scenes assistance) that have to be seen to be believed. While it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, I do recommend it all the same.
