Webcomic News – Kickstarter for From Scratch

‘Tis the season for more Kickstarters! It seems that Kel McDonald, cartoonist for the contemporary fantasy comic Sorcery 101, has launched a Kickstarter for a reprint of her 60-page comic From Scratch, starring several secondary characters who’ve made an appearance in her primary strip. The Kickstarter will run until April 12, 2013.

News Brief – Kevin and Kell

I’m just going to take a moment to offer my condolences to Kevin and Kell cartoonist Bill Holbrook and crew for the loss of Kerry O’Day, a good friend of Holbrook’s who passed away on February 18, 2013 after a brief fight with cancer. While I’ve never met Holbrook at a convention, his memoriam in today’s strip speaks volumes to how much a part of the comic she’s been. You take care, Mr. Holbrook; our thoughts are with you and your friends at this time.

News Brief – Chasing the Sunset Anniversary

I thought I’d send my congratulations to Mithandir and Alien, the writer-artist team behind the fantasy webcomic Chasing the Sunset; CtS is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year (starting today). To celebrate, Mithandir and Alien decided to add a few extras below the main strip to call in the anniversary, including fanart submissions, a quiz for readers to test their knowledge (I’ll admit to having been tempted to deliberately answer everything wrong to see if I was declared to have the memory of a pixie), and even a brief word from Alien and Mithandir on just what brought about the start of CtS. And at 728 strips, its archives aren’t quite long enough to drive new readers into despair, while still providing enough content to draw people in. Anyway, congratulations on ten years, and I look forward to plenty more to come.

Skin Horse Alternative Site

For anyone reading Skin Horse who’ve encountered the site being down, there is an alternative site you can view the comic at:

Gocomics is also running Skin Horse and is not suffering whatever problems that have kept it from being viewed elsewhere. The comic is not on hiatus despite the server issue.

Webcomic News

I’m going to take a break today from reviewing and report on a couple bits of webcomic news. First of all, I’d like to offer congratulations to Anne Onymous, Robin Ericson, and Ian Samson for the tenth anniversary of their contemporary fantasy webcomic The Wotch. While the comic has seen a few hiccups in its update schedule and the recruitment of Samson as replacement artist for Omymous (whose spare allotment of time vanished into the ether – a common problem webcartoonists face as the years go on, though she continues in the authorial role), it continues to excel. Here’s to… well, I’m not sure if TW will last another ten years seeing I suspect its story passed the halfway point a bit ago, but at the very least a successful culmination of its story.

Next, I’d like to offer my condolences to Scott Bieser, whose wife passed away on December 2, 2012 after having suffered a cancer-related stroke on Thanksgiving day. I’m afraid I’m not good at knowing what to say in these situations, but I do suspect that the two weeks hiatus Bieser is taking might be too short a time. Not that he’s going to notice my words on Tangents here. Anyway, may the divinity (or lack thereof) of his choice look over his wife and whatever path occurs once the mortal coil has been cast off.

Finally, the Webcomic Charity Drive was a success, with around $1,248 dollars raised for the Red Cross and the victims of Hurricane Sandy. At the moment I don’t have data on what was raised with Binifund, but undoubtedly someone will let me know after this goes up.

Web-Artist Charity Drive for Hurricane Sandy victims

Today, multiple artists are gathering online for a Web-Artist Charity Drive with proceeds donated to the Red Cross or Binifund to assist victims of Hurricane Sandy and others. In essence, donators make requests for drawings that artists accept, donations are made to the Red Cross or Binifund, and the drawing is made. It’s for a good cause, and you get some art out of the deal. So please, feel free to donate. Or if you’re an artist, join in (if possible).

News Update — Megatokyo site down, alternative viewing location

For those readers of mine who actually do read Megatokyo, it seems that Fred Gallagher’s main site is hosed and he hasn’t been able to get it back running. In the meantime he’s posted another story update (1338 rather than going for over 100% completion of 1337) which can be found at this forum link. I’ll be kind and avoid spoilers, but I must admit it was amusing enough.

Addendum note: The Megatokyo website is now back up, and the update has been uploaded.
