Website Update

Hey all! As you can see, things are a-changing around here after I hired someone who knows what she’s doing to work on the site. And yes, I stand by that statement; even the most knowledgeable coder will have little hiccups in the system while fixing stuff. The difference between a professional and an amateur is that the professional can work through the problems and fix them, while the amateur ends up with cobbled code and baling wire to keep things together. ;)

In the meantime, now that links have been restored (even if the Theme that has been used forever and a decade is currently hiding in the corner while sulking) I want to direct your attention away from the lovely lady behind the curtain and toward little updates I’ve done in the meantime. By which, I mean I’ve added proper links to the “Fiction” and “Meta-Review” sections, and all Meta-Reviews are coded into the system (well, all the Meta-Reviews I was able to track down, that is – and the thumbnails and links in these reviews haven’t been fixed).

Hopefully additional features will be added in time; I’m not going to jinx things by mentioning particulars, however.

So please, feel free to check out the Meta-reviews (which are mostly old and haven’t been updated to the new Review template yet) and Fiction while waiting on reviews. They’re well worth reading.

Website Update

Just as a heads up, I’ve altered how posts are accepted by the system. This prevents the rapid posting-and-deletion of comments on the system that has apparently corrupted several files to date. This shouldn’t affect people unless they are trying to post a one-line comment or are copy-pasting. In short, this is to catch automated processes that spammers use.

In addition, a new story has been posted on the Fiction section of the board, Deus Ex Liber. This is actually one of the first fanfics I wrote back in 2001; while it’s definitely not one of my better works, there are several elements in there that worked quite well… especially near the end. So if you have a spare minute, definitely check it out.

Tangents Site Housekeeping

Just as a heads up, I recently went through and purged a couple dozen probable spam user accounts; it seems the Bots are better able to overcome the Captcha program used to weed them out. If you were accidentally deleted and were legit, I apologize. E-mail me, and I will restore the account. I’m fairly certain the users deleted did not post (for some strange reason the bots just create user accounts and never post spam, but I want to prevent a theoretical spam surge that might prove impossible to totally remove), but to be on the safe side any posts were attributed to a Admin account set up just for this purpose. I apologize for the inconvenience.

Addendum note: It seems the current crop of spambots has learned how to ignore the Turing test. I’ve turned off new member requests for the time being. If you wish to register, then just e-mail me at Tangents Reviews @ gmail . com without the spaces.

Website Maintenance

Just as a quick heads up, I did a little housecleaning of usernames; the spambots have been starting to get past the bot detection software. Fortunately, most of the accounts I purged were obviously bots (seeing their e-mail addresses were in sequential order). If I deleted your account by accident, please e-mail me and I’ll rectify the situation (while the bots oddly don’t post on my site, I did preserve any theoretical messages to the Anonymous account set up just for this reason).

Archive Recovery Project

Thanks to the hard work of a friend of mine, Phase 1 of the Archive Recovery Project is complete. All of the old webcomic reviews (and some other content) have been restored to the system. While the archives have been restored, image files for those reviews are not yet available (though they have been coded in); Phase 2 will involve renaming the older images to the system I started using five or so years back. Phase 3 will involve detecting and repairing broken or incorrect links. Best of all, this occurred just in time to ring in the New Year. Fortuitous timing, that; I owe my friend big for her hard work on the Archives. (She will be hopefully continuing her work with the image files next; link repair will likely be something I need to handle myself. Please note, if you find a broken link in my site, e-mail me at tangentsreviews at gmail dot com and I hopefully can track down the errors.)

Tangents Site Update

Due to ongoing problems related to Tangents being hacked a year or so back, I will likely be doing a full reinstall of the WordPress system. When I do so, I’ll likely choose a new theme for the site; I was wondering if anyone knows of any themes that incorporate two sets of Tags. The current system uses tag names for topical headings. I would like to add a second set with webcomic titles so people can pull up reviews on specific comics (seeing that Searches can pull up articles that just mention the comic in question).

Do note, this could result in a loss of comments. I will try to ensure comments are not lost and reload user names (which will likely result in password changes, I apologize for that inconvenience).

Update schedule

It’s that time of the year again when I go offline for a couple of weeks to defrag, replenish my creative energies, and try to kill large woodland critters with a high-power rifle. Thus in my traditional last-minute effort to create a quick buffer to tide things over, I decided to do another one-paragraph reviews of several comics, much as I did last year. However, of all of last year’s reviews, the one I liked most was for a comic I’d not reviewed before, Geist. So I decided I’d replicate this effort and this time try and write up ten reviews for comics I’ve not managed to review before. Naturally, these reviews aren’t going to be in-depth or do more than give a brief glimpse of what’s in store, but I figure the half dozen of you still reading (along with the hundreds of bots and spammers who are sent my way) might enjoy seeing something new. So… enjoy! And I’ll see you in a couple of weeks. Much as with last year, these reviews will be lacking graphics and be one paragraph in length. The reviews will start Tuesday and run through to Thursday of next week. Yes, that means Tangents will be updating this weekend. Enjoy!
